Long Grove

The first settlers in the Eldridge area were primarily Scotch and Irish Presbyterians who established early farms throughout the region. In 1846, Jacob M. Eldridge moved from Philadelphia to nearby Davenport and purchased land north of the city from the U.S. government for $1.25 per acre. Around the same time, German immigrants known as the “48ers,” many from Schleswig and Holstein, settled throughout Scott County, helping shape the area’s agricultural foundation.

Railroad expansion during the 1860s brought additional growth and new residents. Eldridge Junction, built on land donated by Jacob Eldridge, was officially incorporated on July 2, 1871, followed soon by the establishment of a post office and Presbyterian church. The young community faced several challenges in its early years, including railroad financial struggles in the 1880s, a smallpox epidemic that temporarily isolated the town, a destructive fire in 1904, and a damaging tornado in 1918. Despite these setbacks, Eldridge continued to rebuild and remained an important grain and livestock shipping center for the surrounding farming community.

Modern growth began in the mid-20th century with the formation of the Scott County Library System in 1950 and the establishment of the North Scott Community School District in 1956. By the late 1960s, Eldridge’s population surpassed 1,000 residents, and the development of industrial parks helped fuel continued expansion, setting the stage for the thriving community seen today.

Located just minutes from Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, and Rock Island and adjacent to Highway 61, residents can easily reach destinations throughout the Quad Cities. Eldridge offers a variety of entertainment and recreation options for residents of all ages, from Iowa’s largest trampoline park, Helium, to a community center and skatepark. The area also features several parks with opportunities for walking, hiking, camping, biking, swimming, and fishing. In addition, the city is home to seven churches, a public library, and a fitness center, providing residents with convenient access to both recreational and community amenities.
